Getting your nutrition right
Optimal nutrition before and after surgery is critical for a successful result.
-
In general, aim to eat a well-balanced diet.
-
Avoid alcohol, which affects sleep quality.
-
Smoking is highly toxic, affecting blood flow, bone and tendon healing and increases your risk of infection.
-
Aim for 2 gram of protein per kg of body weight at least a couple of weeks and for 2-3 months after surgery. Your body's need for protein doubles after surgery. Protein is vital in the synthesis of muscles and tendons. Protein powders can be helpful in delivering the correct quantity needed. Leucine and glutamine are two important amino acids which should be prioritised.
-
Vitamin C is important for the protein collagen - which is used in the formation of all major structures and connective tissues. It is likely to be important for rotator cuff healing. I recommend supplementation with 500mg twice daily for at least 6 weeks after surgery.
-
Consider also:
Magnesium - can lower pain and improve sleep
Collagen - to support tendon healing
Creatine - this has been shown to improve strength and mental function
Omegas - anti-inflammatory and muscle support.
Lastly, do not forget to drink enough water!
